Twenty One Pilots (stylized as twenty øne piløts or twenty | one | pilots) is an American musical duo from Columbus, Ohio. The band was originally formed in 2009 by vocalist Tyler Joseph along with Nick Thomas and Chris Salih, who left in 2011. Since their departure, the band's lineup consists of Joseph and drummer Josh Dana. The duo is best known for their singles "Stressed Out," "Ride" and "Heathens." For "Stressed Out," the band won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Duo/Band Performance at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards. The band self-released two albums, Twenty One Pilots (2009) and Regional at Best (2011), and signed with the Fueled by Ramen label in 2012. Their debut album Vessel was released in 2013 and became the second album in history with every track receiving at least gold certification, making Twenty One Pilots the first band in music history to have every song on two albums receive gold or platinum awards.
The duo achieved breakthrough success with their fourth album Blurryface (2015), which yielded the successful singles "Stressed Out" and "Ride" and became the first album to have every track awarded at least gold certification by the Recording Industry Association of America. The release of the single "Heathens" also made the band the first alternative artist in history to have two singles simultaneously reach the top five on the Billboard Hot 100, and the third rock band in history to have two singles simultaneously reach the top five on the Billboard Hot 100, joining the Beatles and Elvis Presley.
The duo has released a total of six studio albums, the most recent of which, Scaled and Icy, was released on May 21, 2021. They have also produced ten No. 1 songs on the Alternative Songs chart, making them the artist with the fourth most No. 1 songs on the chart, just below Linkin Park.
