Thirty Seconds to Mars [θɜːti 'sɛk(ə)nds tuː mɑːz] (English for "Thirty Seconds to Mars") is an American alternative rock band from Los Angeles, California. Founded in 1998 by brothers Jared and Shannon Leto. The band's name was taken by the members from an article by a former Harvard professor, where they talked about technological progress, as a result of which mankind will literally find itself soon "thirty seconds from Mars"[3]. Even at the speed of light, the minimum distance from Earth to Mars (at the time of the opposition) cannot be traveled faster than 3 minutes[4]. In an interview with Kerrang! magazine, Jared Leto named the main bands that influenced his work as Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Nine Inch Nails, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Joy Division and Nirvana. He is also known to say, "Thirty Seconds To Mars is the grandiosity of Pink Floyd with the energy of the Sex Pistols." Thirty Seconds to Mars did not use security and developed a close and strong rapport with their fans. In this sense, Jared Leto considers himself and the band to be followers of Minor Threat, who "...were the first to try to erase the line between rock performer and audience".
