U2 is a rock band from Dublin, Ireland. U2 was formed in 1976, one of the most popular, successful, and influential bands in the world throughout history. The band's albums have sold more than 170 million copies. As of 2023, they have won twenty-two Grammy Awards, more than any other band in the world. The band owes its inception to Larry Mullen, who posted a note on the school bulletin board seeking members for a rock band. Bono (vocals and guitar), Edge (guitar, keys and vocals) and Adam Clayton (bass) responded to the ad. The band's lineup has remained unchanged ever since. By the mid-1980s they had released 4 albums and gained devoted fans, first of all, thanks to their outstanding live performances, unique performances of guitar parts by Edge and Bono's vocals, as well as deep lyrics which became the band's trademark. U2 gained worldwide recognition and status as the most popular band in the world when they released The Joshua Tree in 1987, which is considered to be one of the greatest rock albums. In the 1990s, they responded with the album Achtung Baby and a huge Zoo TV show to the revolution in alternative and dance music, to the criticism that was coming their way, and to what they saw as stagnation in music. At that time they were incessantly experimenting, exploring different musical directions. Since the beginning of the XXI century U2 have been playing more familiar music, using their previous achievements and continuing to enjoy success with the public and critics. In 2004, the band was ranked 22nd on Rolling Stone magazine's "The Immortals:The Fifty Greatest Artists of All Time". In 2005 they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
