TikTok Announces Closure of Its Music Streaming Service

TikTok has revealed that its music streaming service, TikTok Music, will be shutting down on November 28, 2024. A statement on its official website shared the news, encouraging users in Indonesia, Brazil, Australia, Singapore, and Mexico to transfer their playlists by October 28 and request refunds before the November closure.

Ole Obermann, the global head of music business development at ByteDance (TikTok’s parent company), explained that the company’s focus is now shifting towards collaborations with other digital service providers (DSPs). “Our Add to Music App feature has already enabled hundreds of millions of track saves to playlists on partner music streaming services,” said Obermann in a press release.

He added, “We will be closing TikTok Music at the end of November in order to focus on our goal of furthering TikTok’s role in driving even greater music listening and value on music streaming services, for the benefit of artists, songwriters and the industry.”

The Add to Music App, launched in 2023, allowed users to seamlessly save songs they discovered on TikTok to their favorite music streaming services, like Spotify.

Earlier this year, Universal Music Group (UMG) briefly removed its catalog from the platform due to an expired licensing agreement. However, a new deal was reached, and UMG's tracks were restored to TikTok.
