James Hillier Blunt is a British singer, musician and songwriter. He is a retired British Army officer (captain), a professional military man, tank driver. He was born in the family of a hereditary military man, British Colonel Charles Blunt and his wife Jane. He spent his childhood in England, Cyprus and Germany, where his father, an officer in the Army Air Corps, served. At the age of 16 he obtained his pilot's licence. Entered the University of Bristol to study aeronautical engineering sponsored by the Army. After graduation he was required to serve in the army for at least 4 years. Trained at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, he was a Junior Lieutenant in the Life Guards Regiment of the Palace Cavalry, where he rose to the rank of Captain. In 1999, during the bombing of Yugoslavia, Blunt commanded a tank unit with NATO forces on the Macedonian-Yugoslavian border. He retired from the army on 1 October 2002. He rose to fame in 2004 with the release of his debut album Back to Bedlam, achieving worldwide fame with the singles ‘You're Beautiful’ and ‘Goodbye My Lover’. Blunt's second album, All the Lost Souls, released in 2007, reached number one in twelve countries. He then released five more albums about three years apart: Some Kind of Trouble (2010), Moon Landing (2013), The Afterlove (2017), Once Upon a Mind (2019) and Who We Used to Be (2023). He has received several awards, including two Brit Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards and two Ivor Novello Awards, as well as five Grammy nominations. In 2016, he received an honorary Doctor of Music degree from the University of Bristol.
