Michael Joseph Jackson (August 29, 1958, Gary, Indiana - June 25, 2009, Los Angeles, California) - American singer, songwriter, music producer, arranger, dancer, choreographer, actor, screenwriter, philanthropist and entrepreneur. One of the most successful performers in the history of pop music, he is known as "The King of Pop" and the winner of 15 Grammy Awards and hundreds of other awards. The number of Jackson records (albums, singles, compilations, etc.) sold worldwide is 1 billion copies. Michael Jackson has made significant contributions to popular music, music videos, dance and fashion. Born on August 29, 1958 in Gary, Indiana, Michael Jackson was the seventh of nine children in the family of Joseph and Katherine Jackson. Michael grew up with three sisters and five brothers. His father worked as a crane operator in a steel mill, and the whole family lived in a small house. In his spare time, Joseph performed in small local venues with his band, the Falcons, and played electric guitar. The family lived in a musical atmosphere, Catherine recalled singing songs like "Cotton Fields," "She Would Coming 'Round the Mountain" and "Wabash Cannonball" with her children. Members of the Jackson family were members of the Jehovah's Witnesses religion. Catherine began attending their church and was baptized in 1960 when Michael was 2 years old. The Jacksons took religious traditions very seriously, studying the Bible, attending Witness meetings, not celebrating Christmas and birthdays. Despite this, Michael was the only one in the family to be baptized following his mother. In the 1960s, Joseph began to think about forming a band made up of his older sons. Initially, The Jackson Brothers group consisted of Jackie, Jermaine, and Tito. Michael was still too young and only watched from the sidelines as his older brothers rehearsed. In 1963 he began studying at Garnett Elementary School in Gary and performed at one of the school holidays with the song "Climb Ev'ry Mountain", then, noticing his talent, Katherine convinced Joseph to include the five-year-old boy in the lineup. Marlon joined the band at the same time, and the group of five brothers was renamed The Jackson 5. The father raised the children with strict discipline and used force when he was not satisfied with something. Jackson grew up spending a lot of time in the studio, in rehearsals and on stage, with little opportunity to go outside and play with other children in the park. Despite Joseph's rough and oppressive parenting methods, Michael always thanked his father for instilling in him determination, teaching him to perform in public and instilling rigorous discipline, which played a major role in Jackson's future success. At the age of 8, the boy became one of two soloists in the band. Michael Jackson died on June 25, 2009, as a result of an overdose of medication, specifically propofol. On the morning of June 25, 2009, doctor Conrad Murray gave Michael Jackson an injection of propofol and left the singer alone. About two hours later Murray returned to find his patient lying on the bed with his eyes and mouth wide open. The doctor tried to resuscitate the singer, but the attempts were unsuccessful. At 12:21 p.m. local Pacific time, a 911 call was logged. The paramedics arrived 3 minutes and 17 seconds later and found Jackson out of breath with his heart stopped and began CPR. Attempts to bring Michael Jackson back to life continued on the road and for an hour after arriving at UCLA Medical Center at 1:14pm. These attempts were unsuccessful. Death was pronounced at 2:26 p.m. local time.
