George Michael (George Michael, real name Georgios Kyriakos Panayiotou, Greek Γεώργιος Kυριάκος Παναγιώτου; 25 June 1963, London - 25 December 2016, Oxfordshire) is a British singer, poet and composer of Greek origin. During his musical career (solo and as part of the duo Wham!) some 110 million copies of his records have been sold, making George Michael one of the most successful pop singers. Winner of two Grammy Awards, for Album of the Year (Faith, 1988) and for Best R&B Duo (with Aretha Franklin, I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me), 1987). George Michael was born to a Greek Cypriot immigrant in the 1950s and an English woman. His musical career started in 1981 when he and his school friend Andrew Ridgely formed the band The Executives. The band was not successful, and then Michael and Ridgely decided to perform as a duo called Wham! After Wham! broke up, the singer said that he intended to start a solo career and write more serious, grown-up music. Released back under the Wham! label, the life-affirming song Freedom drew everyone's attention to Michael as one of the most talented and fashionable figures of his generation. Fans eagerly awaited the release of their idol's first solo album. This album, entitled Faith, arrived in record stores on October 30, 1987. On a wave of hysteria caused by the release of the funky record, over 16 million copies were sold, with Billboard Magazine naming it the best-selling disc in the USA at the end of the year. In the spring of 1989 the singer took the third place in the poll of the Moskovsky Komsomolets newspaper devoted to possible tours of foreign artists in the USSR, suggested by the State Concert Committee (first place went to Pink Floyd, second - to singer Sandra). The second album Listen Without Prejudice, Vol. 1 brought Michael two more hits, Freedom! '90 and Praying for Time, but was overall much less commercially successful than Faith. George Michael accused Sony's record label of not investing enough in album advertising. This led to a lawsuit between the singer and Sony, which Michael lost. The singer then refused to release albums until his contract with Sony was up. In the long break between albums, the singer releases the single Too Funky, included in the compilation Red Hot + Dance, and the duet Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me with Elton John, and also takes part in the Freddie Mercury tribute concert with Queen.
