Metallica (Los Angeles, USA) is an American metal band formed by vocalist and guitarist James Hatfield and drummer Lars Ulrich in Los Angeles, California, in 1981. Metallica is one of the four founding members of thrash metal genre (along with Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax), which had a defining influence on its development, and it is said that the bands' works marked the beginning of the development of this genre in music. The current Metallica lineup consists of founding members and primary songwriters James Hetfield (lead vocals, rhythm guitar) and Lars Ulrich (drums, percussion), lead guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Robert Trujillo. Metallica have released ten studio albums, four live albums, twelve video albums, a cover album, two extended albums, 37 singles and 39 music videos. The band has won nine Grammy Awards in 23 categories, and its last six studio albums (starting with Metallica) have consistently debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. Metallica is considered one of the most commercially successful bands of all time, having sold over 125 million copies of albums worldwide as of 2018.
