Родился 16 октября 1961 года в Москве, родители — инженер Лев Наумович Хавтан (21.12.1931—2002) и учительница английского и немецкого языков Этя Мееровна Хавтан (урождённая Спектор; 8 августа 1937, Шаргород — 19 февраля 2018). Мать во время войны была с семьёй заключена в Шаргородское гетто в Транснистрии (её отец погиб на фронте), о чём написала книгу мемуаров (2004). Детство и юность прожил в московском районе Кузьминки, которому впоследствии посвятил песню «От Таганки до Кузьминок» (альбом «Мода»). Играть на гитаре начал в школьном возрасте, под влиянием общей моды. Окончил музыкальную школу по классу классической шестиструнной гитары. Его учителем была Светлана Анатольевна Дегтева. Поклонник самой разной музыки — от «новой волны» британского рока до классических американских рок-н-роллов 50-х годов, с начала 1980-х стал одеваться и выглядеть как стиляга. Окончив школу, поступил в Московский институт инженеров железнодорожного транспорта. Начало музыкальной карьеры Евгения началось в ВИА «Редкая птица», где также играли Сергей Галанин и Алексей Аедоницкий. В 1982 году Хавтан, будучи уже опытным гитаристом, принял приглашение группы Гарика Сукачёва «Постскриптум». Однако сильные различия в увлечениях, стиле и профессионализме музыкантов привели к тому, что «Постскриптум» после этого практически распался. Тогда Хавтан привёл в группу новых музыкантов и вместе с барабанщиком «Постскриптума» Павлом Кузиным создал свой коллектив, играющий смесь «новой волны» и рока 50-х—60-х годов. Состав новой группы, ещё не имевшей названия, был укомплектован саксофонистом Александром Степаненко, басистом Андреем Конусовым и вокалисткой Ивонной Андерс (настоящее имя Жанна Агузарова). После одного из самых первых выступлений, прошедшего в декабре 1983 на дискотеке в комплексе «Крылатское», группа решает оставить себе название «Браво». Кстати, название группы придумала подруга Жанны Агузаровой. После одного из посещений Большого театра девушка подумала, что традиционные театральные крики «Браво» — неплохое имя для коллектива. Музыканты согласились, что её предложение лучше придуманных ими вариантов — «Твист», «Шейк» или «КВН». Официальной регистрации у новой команды не было и быть не могло, поэтому выступали они подпольно. 18 марта 1984 года после одного из таких выступлений на тогдашней окраине Москвы в районе Бескудниково во Дворце Культуры «Мосэнерготехпром» участники были задержаны за «нелегальную предпринимательскую деятельность» (так как все доходы от билетов не декларировались). Против музыкантов было возбуждено уголовное дело, а Хавтан был отчислен из института. В процессе следствия выяснилось, что паспорт Жанны был поддельным, и после пребывания в «Матросской Тишине» Жанна была выслана из Москвы в Сибирь. Спустя несколько лет уголовное дело было закрыто «за неимением доказательств», и группа вступила в Московскую рок-лабораторию, созданную по аналогии с Ленинградским рок-клубом. Но пробыла в её составе совсем недолго, так как после победы в фестивале Рок-панорама-86 в «Центральном Доме Туриста» в номинации «Открытие фестиваля» была приглашена на профессиональную работу в Московскую областную филармонию. After graduating from school, he entered the Moscow Institute of Railway Transport Engineers. The beginning of Evgeniy’s musical career began at the VIA “Rare Bird”, where Sergei Galanin and Alexey Aedonitsky also played. In 1982, Khavtan, already an experienced guitarist, accepted the invitation of Garik Sukachev’s group “Postscriptum”. However, strong differences in the hobbies, style and professionalism of the musicians led to the fact that Postscript practically disintegrated after that. Then Khavtan brought new musicians into the group and, together with Postscriptum drummer Pavel Kuzin, created his own band, playing a mixture of “new wave” and rock of the 50s-60s. The composition of the new group, which did not yet have a name, was completed by saxophonist Alexander Stepanenko, bassist Andrei Konusov and vocalist Yvonne Anders (real name Zhanna Aguzarova). After one of the very first performances, which took place in December 1983 at a disco in the Krylatskoye complex, the group decided to keep the name “Bravo”. By the way, the name of the group was invented by a friend of Zhanna Aguzarova. After one of her visits to the Bolshoi Theater, the girl thought that the traditional theatrical cries of “Bravo” were a good name for the group. The musicians agreed that her proposal was better than the options they came up with - “Twist”, “Sheik” or “KVN”. The new team did not and could not have official registration, so they performed underground. On March 18, 1984, after one of these performances on the then outskirts of Moscow in the Beskudnikovo district in the Mosenergotekhprom Palace of Culture, the participants were detained for “illegal business activity” (since all income from tickets was not declared). A criminal case was opened against the musicians, and Khavtan was expelled from the institute. During the investigation, it turned out that Zhanna’s passport was fake, and after her stay in Matrosskaya Tishina, Zhanna was expelled from Moscow to Siberia. A few years later, the criminal case was closed “for lack of evidence,” and the group joined the Moscow Rock Laboratory, created by analogy with the Leningrad Rock Club. But she stayed in its composition for only a short time, since after winning the Rock Panorama-86 festival at the Central House of Tourist in the Opening of the Festival nomination, she was invited to professional work at the Moscow Regional Philharmonic. After a series of expulsions and reinstatements, Khavtan finally graduated from the institute in 1987, and the next day after receiving a diploma of higher education he left with Bravo on tour. Subsequently, Bravo underwent numerous lineup changes; Khavtan remained the only constant member of the group and the author of the music (and at times the words) of the vast majority of the songs. After numerous vocal changes, Havtan began singing some of the songs himself, sharing vocal duties with Robert Lenz.
