So It Seems
Songwriters: Charlie Cunningham
Licenses: Mute Song, Infectious Music
Like a head-clearing walk, So It Seems holds a brittle line between hopeful forward motion and quiet reflection. Stuttering into life as though a hesitant thought, the guitar opens into a resolute stride and Cunningham’s internal monologue begins to flow. Concerns of the material things we might bring under control, ‘what you eat/the company you keep’, oscillate to abstractions that leave us reaching through a ‘phase of doubt that you can learn to live without.’
In 'So It Seems’ Charlie and long-time producer Sam Hudson Scott create a tension found in all timeless songwriting and reanimate it through a modern lens. At its climax, in a chattering shroud of sonics comes the pivotal lyric of the song—'this indecision has turned to self-belief’. We’re left to ponder a healthy logic, an opportunity from the introspection that isolation brings about: you can’t forge community until you understand the ‘community’ of your self. Again, Cunningham shows a singular ability to let us in to our vulnerability via his own.
On the track and forthcoming album, Charlie says - ‘Writing in a period of isolation, away from friends and family, I thought a lot—I think we all did—about how we might comfort and reassure ourselves. We’re the sum of our competing personalities. These songs are a chat between those personalities.’
