After over four decades behind the drum kit, Iron Maiden's legendary drummer Nicko McBrain has officially stepped down, marking the end of an extraordinary era for the band. McBrain, who joined Maiden in 1982 and became a cornerstone of their sound, announced his decision following the conclusion of the ‘The Future Past’ world tour, citing a desire to step away from the demanding touring lifestyle.
McBrain, who suffered a minor stroke in early 2023, shared that his recovery journey was challenging but fulfilling. “Touring with Maiden these last 42 years has been an incredible journey,” he said in a heartfelt statement. “To my devoted fan base, you made it all worthwhile. I love you!” He signed off with his iconic phrase, “Up the Irons!”
In his place, Iron Maiden has welcomed Simon Dawson, a drummer known for his work with Steve Harris’ side project, British Lion. Dawson has been part of Harris' musical ventures since 2012, contributing to albums like ‘The Burning’. He will officially join Maiden on their ‘Run For Your Lives’ tour, set to kick off in Budapest on May 27, 2025.
Reflecting on McBrain's departure, Iron Maiden manager Rod Smallwood expressed gratitude and admiration: “Nicko, thank you for being an irrepressible force behind the drum kit for 42 years. You’ll always be part of the Maiden family.” Steve Harris echoed the sentiment, affirming that McBrain’s legacy within the band is everlasting.
McBrain’s resilience in overcoming his health challenges is a testament to his dedication to the music and the fans. While he’s stepping back from touring, his impact on the heavy metal world remains indelible, and fans can rest assured they haven’t seen the last of him.
