Of all the time Americans spend listening to audio, 74% is dedicated to music, while audiobooks and podcasts remain less popular.
A new report from Edison Research shows that music is far more popular than many might think. While podcasts and audiobooks are gaining popularity, there simply is more music available. Edison Research notes that music libraries have existed for hundreds of years and are accessible on many platforms.
Interestingly, 32% of the time spent on music by listeners aged 13 and older is through AM/FM radio and streaming stations, making radio the primary source of music content.
Streaming services such as Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon, Pandora, and YouTube account for 28% of music listening time, with YouTube alone making up 18%. The remaining 9% is spent on SiriusXM, another 9% on personal music collections (vinyl, CDs, downloaded files), and 3% on music channels on TV.
When it comes to listeners aged 13 to 64 years, streaming slightly surpasses AM/FM radio, accounting for 31% of their overall music listening time.
