Blur at Wembley: Even Banksy Couldn’t Stay Away

Blur’s legendary Wembley reunion gigs in 2022 are still making waves, and now bassist Alex James has spilled some intriguing backstage tea: Banksy himself was there—and he absolutely loved it.

Appearing on the Chris Evans Breakfast Show, James reminisced about the sold-out shows, which marked Blur’s return to the stage after seven years. When asked about the mysterious artist's presence backstage, James confirmed Banksy was there to support his longtime friend and Blur frontman Damon Albarn.

“He’s very close with Damon,” James revealed, recalling Banksy’s quiet demeanor during the event. “He just sat there quietly. He loved that gig. He said ‘That was like watching four lads have a kick about in the park. But the park was Wembley Stadium’, bless him – I’m boasting now.”

The connection between Banksy and Blur dates back to 2003 when the anonymous artist designed the cover for the band’s experimental album Think Tank. Albarn has also supported Banksy’s work, making an appearance at the final gig of Dismaland, the artist’s dark twist on theme parks.

Banksy’s presence at Wembley adds yet another layer to his enigmatic persona, which continues to intrigue fans worldwide. Earlier this year, reports surfaced that the artist might be forced to reveal his identity in court, with rumors swirling that his real name might be Robbie.

Whatever his true identity, one thing is clear—Blur’s reunion left a lasting impression, even on one of the most elusive figures in art.
