Lady Gaga has unveiled the official music video for her latest single, Disease, offering fans a chilling look into her upcoming seventh album, LG7, set for release in February 2025. The song, a throbbing, electro-pop track, dropped on October 25 and has already created a storm among her fans.
Directed by Tanu Muino, the Disease video opens with an eerie shot of a quiet suburban street, soon interrupted by a shadowy figure behind the wheel of a car. As the camera zooms in, Gaga appears, sprawled across the bonnet, her expression twisted, with a haunting nosebleed as she sings the opening lines. The video then escalates, showing her tangled in a surreal and unsettling struggle with a character in a Renaissance-inspired plague doctor costume, an embodiment of her inner demons.
The narrative intensifies as Gaga attempts to escape, only to be trapped between two closing walls, symbolizing the inescapable nature of her own turmoil. Speaking about the video, Gaga shared, “I think a lot about the relationship I have with my own inner demons. It’s never been easy for me to face how I get seduced by chaos and turmoil. It makes me feel claustrophobic.”
“‘Disease’ is about facing that fear, facing myself and my inner darkness, and realising that sometimes I can’t win or escape the parts of myself that scare me. That I can try and run from them but they are still part of me and I can run and run but eventually I’ll meet that part of myself again, even if only for a moment.”
For Gaga, the video is not only a creative expression but a deeply personal confrontation. “Dancing, morphing, running, purging. Again and again, back with myself. This integration is ultimately beautiful to me because it’s mine and I’ve learned to handle it.,” she continued. “I am the conductor of my own symphony. I am every actor in the plays that are my art and my life. No matter how scary the question, the answers are inside of me. Essential, inextricable parts of what makes me me. I save myself by keeping going. I am the whole me, I am strong, and I am up for the challenge. Happy Halloween.”
With Disease, Gaga has signaled a thrilling, darker direction that has her fans buzzing, especially as she promises there’s “a LOT more to come.” As Halloween approaches, this track seems to be the perfect anthem for embracing one’s inner shadows and moving forward, one daring step at a time.
