In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Fleetwood Mac’s legendary Stevie Nicks has shed light on her complicated relationship with former bandmate Lindsey Buckingham, sharing that she had given him “300 million chances” before ultimately calling it quits in the band. Nicks last spoke with Buckingham at the funeral of their late bandmate, Christine McVie, in 2023, and the reunion underscored, for her, the emotional journey the two had been on.
Nicks described the gathering at Malibu’s Nobu, where fierce winds swept through, upending decorations in a scene that felt like Christine’s spirit was making itself known. “Christine threw down a hurricane on top of Nobu,” Nicks remarked. “It was so intense; we all felt like she was there with us.”
The rocky history between Nicks and Buckingham has been well-documented, but this moment marked a final shift for Nicks. Recalling a past moment at a MusiCares benefit concert, Nicks shared how she realized that she’d had enough. Inspired by LeAnn Rimes’ song "Borrowed," she had hoped for a beautiful performance with Buckingham, but things took a different turn. Her parents’ words echoed in her mind, guiding her towards peace and closure. “I’m done,” she thought, decisively.
Known for their legendary yet turbulent creative partnership, Nicks shared a striking moment that made her realize their time together was truly over. "He wasn’t very nice to anybody," she said, adding, "He wasn’t very nice to Harry Styles." The incident stayed with her, and it was her parents' voices, echoing in her mind, that cemented her choice: “Are you really going to spend the next 15 years of your life with this man?” her mother’s voice seemed to ask. Her father’s practical advice followed: “It’s time for you guys to get a divorce.”
Despite everything, Nicks harbors no ill will toward Buckingham, expressing her wish for him to continue creating music. “He’s also an icon, and he can teach people,” she said, emphasizing his continued potential to inspire new generations.
While Buckingham recently said he’d rejoin Fleetwood Mac “in a heartbeat,” Nicks is resolute about the band's fate. Since McVie’s passing, she sees no future for Fleetwood Mac. Reflecting on their decades together, she said, “We had lots and lots of time, and lots and lots of tours that could have been the reconciliation tour and ‘now we’re going to quit’ tour. So, I just felt that Christine and I had done everything we could do to make it a happy place. And it wasn’t a happy place anymore.”
For fans, this news might be bittersweet. But for Nicks, it’s clear she’s found peace, letting go of a chapter marked by iconic music, countless tours, and one of rock’s most storied line-ups.
