Legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese is set to direct the filming of a special tribute concert in honor of Robbie Robertson, the iconic guitarist and songwriter for The Band, who passed away in August 2023 at the age of 80. Scorsese, who famously documented The Band’s farewell show in the 1978 classic The Last Waltz, will once again capture the magic of Robertson’s music for the world to see.
The tribute concert, titled Life Is A Carnival: A Musical Celebration Of Robbie Robertson, will take place tonight (October 17) at LA’s Kia Forum and is slated for a future release. While details on the format of the film are still under wraps, the project already has fans buzzing, especially with Scorsese at the helm.
Robertson had a long-standing creative relationship with Scorsese, scoring several of the director’s iconic films, including Raging Bull, Casino, The Wolf Of Wall Street, The Irishman, and the recent Killers Of The Flower Moon. This tribute concert is sure to reflect the deep artistic bond the two shared.
The star-studded lineup includes music legends like Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, Mavis Staples, Trey Anastasio, and many more, ensuring that Robertson’s legacy will be celebrated in grand style. With the likes of Bruce Hornsby, Allison Russell, and Bobby Weir joining the mix, and a house band featuring members of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, this promises to be a night to remember.
In addition to this project, Scorsese is also producing a new documentary on The Beatles, titled Beatles ’64, which will premiere on Disney+ next month. The film will delve into the Fab Four’s historic first visit to America in 1964, featuring never-before-seen footage and offering a fresh perspective on their meteoric rise.
