Robert Smith Reveals The Cure’s New Albums Are Nearly Done

The Cure’s Robert Smith has shared exciting news: the band has not only completed their long-awaited album Songs Of A Lost World, set to drop on November 1, but they’ve got another one "virtually finished" and yet another still in the works.

Fans have been eagerly waiting for new music since the band’s last release in 2008, 4:13 Dream. Now, in a conversation with Matt Everitt, Smith detailed the journey that led to Songs Of A Lost World and teased even more tracks waiting in the wings. Originally, the band planned to release something to mark their 40th anniversary, but that idea didn’t sit right with Smith.

“I felt that we should be summing up,” said Smith. “I thought, ‘The 40th anniversary of the band happens in 2018, and the 40th anniversary of the first album [‘Three Imaginary Boys’] was is 2019, so we’ll do something that sums up what the band is and where we got to. It was a grand plan – and grand plans generally don’t work very well, in my experience!.” However, things took a more natural turn in 2019, and the idea of simply making great music took over.

“We recorded 25 or 26 songs in 2019,” Smith shared, hinting at an overflow of material. While Songs Of A Lost World will showcase the band’s recent work, there’s plenty more, including the fan-favorite track "Another Happy Birthday," which wasn’t included on the album.

Smith also acknowledged the struggles of making a cohesive project: “We recorded three albums in 2019; that’s always been the problem. I’ve tried to get three albums completed. After waiting this long, I was like, ‘Let’s just throw out Cure albums every few months!’ Everything with hindsight, you think, ‘Really? I could have done that a lot better’ It will work out this time. Having finished this one, the second one is virtually finished as well. The third one is a bit more difficult because, well if we get that far… Talking about the third album, you see what I mean? I just can’t help myself”

Though fans may have waited over a decade for new music, Smith promises there’s more than enough to keep them hooked. With one album ready and another on the horizon, it seems The Cure’s legacy is far from over. And for those lucky enough to catch them, The Cure will be playing two special shows in London, including an album release event on November 1.
