In an extraordinary find for music fans, newly discovered master tapes of unreleased Jimi Hendrix recordings from 1968 have surfaced and are now headed to auction. These tapes—featuring alternate versions of iconic tracks like ‘Up From the Skies,’ ‘Ain’t No Telling,’ ‘Little Miss Lover,’ and ‘Stone Free’—are expected to fetch an astounding £200,000.
The recordings, which are notably different from the versions fans know, offer a fresh glimpse into Hendrix’s genius. Described as being "tighter" and "smoother," with more emphasis on Hendrix’s legendary guitar work, the tracks offer an intimate experience for the eventual buyer—who will only be allowed to enjoy them in the privacy of their own home.
The auction, set for November 15 and hosted by memorabilia specialists Propstore, will be live-streamed from London. Mark Hochman, a music consultant at Propstore, highlighted the exclusivity of the tapes, saying, “These versions have never been heard or circulated before. Whoever buys it will have the kudos of having your own Jimi Hendrix songs which only you can listen to.”
These tapes are part of a collection being sold by Patricia “Trixie” Sullivan, who was a personal assistant to Hendrix’s manager Mike Jeffery in the late '60s. Along with the master tapes, other rare memorabilia, such as a dry cleaning bill, eviction notice from Ringo Starr’s London flat, and personal pay slips, will also be on the auction block.
Additionally, fans can look forward to the first authorized documentary about Jimi Hendrix’s life, currently in production, which promises to explore the enigmatic legend’s journey like never before.
