Elton John and Chappell Roan Join Joni Mitchell for a Jam Session

Joni Mitchell’s triumphant return to the stage this past weekend in Los Angeles was already a historic moment, marking her first headlining concerts in the city in over 24 years. But what fans didn’t see was the star-studded, impromptu jam session that went down backstage.

After the shows on October 19 and 20 at the Hollywood Bowl, a private gathering of music legends took place, with none other than Elton John, Chappell Roan, and Lucy Dacus joining Mitchell herself for a lively jam. Brandi Carlile, who has long been a close collaborator and advocate for Mitchell’s recent return to performing, shared a video of the event, giving fans a glimpse of this rare musical magic.

In the clip, Elton John leads the group through his 1983 hit ‘I’m Still Standing’ while Joni, beaming with joy, taps her cane in time with the music. The room was buzzing with musical greats, including Tim Hanseroth, Blake Mills, and Allison Russell, all joining in for what Carlile cheekily described as “the ultimate backstage Joni Jam.”

Mitchell’s concerts were already packed with star power, featuring guest appearances from Brandi Carlile, Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes, Annie Lennox, Marcus Mumford, Jon Batiste, and more. On the first night, Mitchell brought back her politically charged song ‘Dog Eat Dog’ for the first time since 1985, sparking a wave of emotion in the crowd.

At one point during the show, after a fan insulted Donald Trump, Mitchell responded with her own fiery message: “F**k Donald Trump.” She then urged everyone to vote, adding, “This is an important one. I wish I could vote – I’m Canadian. I’m one of those lousy immigrants.”

Mitchell’s Hollywood Bowl performances, both on stage and behind the scenes, were truly unforgettable, showing the world that her musical fire still burns bright.
