Sabrina Carpenter Fights for "Espresso"

Pop sensation Sabrina Carpenter, 25, recently opened up about her struggle to release her chart-topping hit "Espresso" in an exclusive interview with Variety on August 6. Despite initial doubts from higher-ups, Carpenter's faith in the song paid off, marking her first top-five entry on the Billboard Hot 100 and achieving number one in the U.K., Ireland, and Australia.

"I was completely alone in wanting to release ‘Espresso.’ Not so much from my immediate team. But when it came to ‘the powers above,’” Carpenter revealed. "There was a lot of questioning behind whether it made sense. But they trusted me in the end, and I was happy that I believed in myself at that moment."

In June, Carpenter shared with Rolling Stone how her humorous and catchy track "Espresso" became such a massive hit. “My mom has been like, ‘Do you feel crazy right now?’” she said, referring to the song's unexpected success. “I just love that people get my sense of humor."

Inspired by a whimsical trip to a crêperie in France, "Espresso" features an irresistible chorus that Carpenter remains unapologetically proud of. "I decided to put that burden on other people,” she teased.

Collaborating with songwriters Steph Jones and Amy Allen, along with producer Julian Bunetta, played a crucial role in crafting the song's memorable lyrics. "That’s the only way those borderline idiotic-slash-funniest lyrics can happen,” Carpenter said. “I’ve really honed in on the people that I love making music with.”

Riding the wave of "Espresso's" success, Carpenter announced a collaboration with Van Leeuwen for an espresso-flavored ice cream, which debuted on June 28. "Available starting JUNE 28th!!!!!" Carpenter excitedly shared on social media, showcasing the ice cream carton adorned with the single's cover art. Playfully referencing her song, she captioned an image of the treat's swirl: "It is that sweet."

Fans have even more to look forward to with the release of Carpenter's sixth studio album, "Short n’ Sweet," set to drop on August 23.
