Hozier Recalls Awkward Meeting with Cillian Murphy

Hozier recently shared a hilarious yet slightly embarrassing story about the time he tried to “play it cool” when he met actor Cillian Murphy—despite nursing what he called a “rough” hangover. The Irish singer-songwriter recounted the experience during his show at the Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minnesota, earlier this month, much to the delight of his fans.

According to Hozier, the story began after a heavy night of drinking with an old friend. The next morning, despite feeling the effects of the night before, he had to catch a flight. “I’m like rattled. You know, that type of hangover where you’re shaking,” Hozier admitted, describing his rough state.

It was at the airport, in this less-than-ideal condition, that he bumped into Cillian Murphy. Hozier, real name Andrew Hozier-Byrne, recalled how his tall frame didn’t help when he clumsily walked straight into a wall at the airport, leaving him with a head injury.

Still reeling from the impact, Hozier boarded the plane and, to his surprise, found himself sitting near none other than the Peaky Blinders star. “And then I look over to the left of me on this plane and I see a famous Irish actor. I’m also subject to celebrity shock where you see somebody you’ve seen on screen a thousand times and you’re like, ‘Oh my God, that’s a famous person’. And when I see Cillian Murphy is to my left…” Hozier said, noting how surreal it was to see a famous face in such close quarters.

Just as Murphy approached to introduce himself, Hozier realized he was bleeding slightly from the earlier mishap. Despite this, he tried to keep his cool. “He was so sweet and so kind,” Hozier recalled, although he never had the courage to tell Murphy about the embarrassing situation he was in.

Hozier revealed that the encounter inspired a line in his song "Too Sweet," where he sings, “I aim low, I aim true and the ground’s where I go.”

In other news, Hozier recently dropped a politically charged new single titled "Nobody’s Soldier," part of his new EP Unaired. The song, which critiques global arms dealing, was first debuted at his Lollapalooza 2024 headline set.
