Queen concert film heads to IMAX theaters

Queen is coming to the big screen!

Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon — the founding members of one of the most influential bands to come out of London in the 1970s — are having their story told like never before.

Queen Rock Montreal, presented by IMAX, is a digitally re-mastered concert film featuring the entertainers performing some of their biggest hits, including, “Another One Bites the Dust,” “We Are the Champions,” “Somebody To Love,” “Bohemian Rhapsody” and more.

In an exclusive PEOPLE sneak peek, the band is seen rocking out on stage in all of their glory in front of adoring fans.

“This exhilarating live concert from 1981 is a window into Queen in their most unalloyed form, giving audiences a larger-than-life, front-row immersive experience,” the press release states.

“I don’t think we quite realized it at the time, but this film has preserved one of the highest peaks in Queen’s touring life, on stage in the old glory days. The director was very much focused on Freddie, and this now stands as probably the most precious intimate capture ever of Mr. Mercury at his full awesome power,” said May, 76.

Added Taylor, 74, “Enjoy. We were young!”

Executive producers include Geoff Kempin and Alice Webb for Mercury Studios and Jim Beach and Matilda Beach for Queen Films.

The film captures what creators describe as “a pivotal moment in the band’s history.”

Following a 15-month hiatus, Queen returned for the fourth time to Montreal’s 18,000-seat Forum in November 1981, setting the show for Queen Rock Montreal.

“Fueled by the release of The Game album, their smash single "Under Pressure," and extensive touring, Queen now dominated the charts in every major territory across the globe,” the release continues.

While in Montreal, the band performed two shows, which allowed them to gather enough footage for “a full-length concert film to properly document their live show, highlighting the state-of-the art sound recording. Having spent almost two years on the road, the group was ready for such a challenge and hit Montreal in top form for what would end up being two consecutive sold out, legendary nights.”

In the upcoming global release directed by Saul Swimmer, each member of the group is seen demonstrating their individual strengths.

Fans will experience rock and roll royalty hit the stage in The IMAX Experience®, which includes 12-channel surround sound, crystal-clear images, and IMAX’s customized theater geometry.

Queen Rock Montreal will be available for one weekend only: Jan. 18-21, 2024
