Madonna's Biopic Resurrection: "Who’s That Girl" is Back On Track

Hold onto your cone bras, folks—Madonna’s biopic is back in the spotlight! Yesterday, the Queen of Pop herself took to social media to announce that she’s been hard at work rewriting the script for her biographical film, now titled "Who’s That Girl." Yes, it shares a name with her 1987 album, but don’t get it twisted—this isn’t a remake of her ‘87 comedy flick.

This biopic has been a long time coming, with plans set in motion several years ago. After hitting a roadblock in January last year, when the project was shelved, Madonna’s vision for the film is finally seeing the light of day. Originally, the pop legend was set to direct the film herself to fend off any "misogynistic men" from messing with her story. Can you blame her?

Last year’s rumors about the film's demise were tied to Madonna’s 40th anniversary ‘Celebration’ tour, which took off in July 2023. But don’t fret, the project wasn’t dead—just paused. Universal Pictures has since hinted that the Material Girl is still very much invested in bringing this film to life, once she can sync it with her busy schedule.

Enter Julia Garner, the standout star from "Ozark" and "Inventing Anna." She’s still on board to play Madge, after emerging as the top pick from over a dozen candidates. Talk about nailing the casting call!

In a 2022 chat with Variety, Madonna shed light on her hands-on approach to the biopic. “I’ve had an extraordinary life, I must make an extraordinary film,” she said. “No one’s going to tell my story, but me.” And if there’s one thing we know about Madonna, it’s that she doesn’t do things by halves.

When asked about the script, she didn’t hold back: “I have a very long script that is really hard for me to make shorter. I’ve been whittling away at it, but it’s like hacking off my limbs.” Only Madonna could compare editing to a gruesome self-amputation and still make it sound like an art form.

So, what can we expect from "Who’s That Girl"? If Madonna’s track record is anything to go by, it’s bound to be a no-holds-barred, rollercoaster ride through the life of one of pop’s most enduring icons. With Julia Garner bringing her A-game and Madonna steering the ship, this biopic is poised to be as iconic as the woman herself.
