Phil Collins Teases Possible Return to Music After Two Decades

Phil Collins might be gearing up for a musical comeback after more than 20 years away from original studio albums. The legendary Genesis frontman hasn’t released new music since contributing to the soundtrack of Disney’s Brother Bear in 2003, with his last solo album, Testify, dropping the previous year.

The news about Collins’ potential return came through a Facebook post by record producer and journalist Simon Napier-Bell on August 19. Napier-Bell, who interviewed Collins for a new documentary about London’s historic Marquee Club, revealed that Collins is in great spirits and has recently updated his studio. “For sure, before too long we’re going to hear some new music,” Napier-Bell hinted.

This revelation follows Collins’ announcement of a special 30th anniversary box set of his 1993 album Both Sides, set for release on September 20 via Rhino Records. The lavish box set includes five vinyl records: two remastered versions of the original album by Abbey Road Studios’ Miles Showell, and three additional records featuring demos, B-sides, and live recordings from that era.

Despite Collins’ health challenges, including a severe spinal injury from 2007 that has affected his mobility, there is palpable excitement about his possible new material. At Genesis’ final show in March 2022, Collins performed from a wheelchair, reflecting the impact of his condition on his ability to tour.

In September 2022, Genesis sold a substantial portion of their music assets to Concord Music Group in a deal reportedly worth over $300 million. This acquisition includes master recordings from both Genesis and Collins’ solo career, featuring iconic tracks like ‘In the Air Tonight’, ‘You’ll Be In My Heart’, and ‘Against All Odds’.

Fans are eagerly awaiting to see if Collins will indeed return to the studio, marking a new chapter in his storied career.
