Lana Del Rey Swaps Country for Southern Gothic Vibes

Lana Del Rey fans might have to prepare for some surprises on her upcoming album, Lasso. Originally described as a country-tinged project with contributions from Jack Antonoff and country producer Luke Laird, the album may be heading in a new direction after all. In a recent interview, Del Rey suggested that her vision for the album’s sound is shifting, leaning away from her initial country influences.

The singer hinted at the project’s “energetic pause,” describing a moment when she didn’t fully resonate with the album’s American-inspired aesthetic. “I stopped because I didn’t recognize myself. I would like this album to be a reflection of the person I am today. I might turn it into something more ‘southern gothic’, like it was supposed to be in the beginning, and less country,” she admitted, sharing that she’s considering a more “southern gothic” style—a concept she had in mind from the start.

However, after rumors started swirling about this new direction, Del Rey took to Instagram to clarify that there may have been a miscommunication in translation about her comments on the album’s style.

Though the exact vibe of Lasso remains a mystery, Del Rey did reveal that the album will focus less on intensely introspective themes, hinting instead at a lighter, perhaps more playful approach. “Maybe more American Songbook style?” she mused, also adding that she feels a newfound sense of ease in the creative process: “If you hang in long enough, it just feels easy. There’s no vindication, no nothing – I’m just kind of happy to be here. It’s easy-going in that way.”
