Eddie Murphy is diving back into music history, taking on the role of George Clinton, the trailblazing funk pioneer, in a new biopic directed by Bill Condon. The film, based on Clinton’s memoir Brothas Be, Yo Like George, Ain’t That Funkin’ Kinda Hard On You?, will chronicle his journey from North Carolina roots to the formation of the iconic Parliament-Funkadelic collective and his rise as a godfather of funk.
The script, penned by Virgil Williams, promises an in-depth look into Clinton’s life, highlighting his impact on music, culture, and the Black American experience. Murphy will also produce through his own company, Eddie Murphy Productions, while Clinton himself is on board as an executive producer, ensuring an authentic retelling of his legacy. The film marks the second time Murphy and Condon have collaborated, following 2006's Dreamgirls, for which Murphy earned an Oscar nomination.
Parliament-Funkadelic has remained a vital influence on modern music, last releasing Medicaid Fraud Dog in 2018. Clinton, who officially retired from touring in 2019, continues to leave his mark, appearing on Kamasi Washington’s recent track, “Get Lit.”
Meanwhile, Murphy is keeping busy with the announcement of Shrek 5, scheduled for release in 2026, where he’ll reprise his beloved role as Donkey. Murphy hinted at the possibility of a standalone Donkey film as well, which is already generating excitement among fans. For now, though, all eyes are on his upcoming role as Clinton, as fans gear up to see how Murphy captures the spirit of funk's fearless frontman.
