Cher has always been a treasure trove of legendary stories, and her upcoming Cher: The Memoir is delivering plenty of them. One standout anecdote from the memoir, which releases November 19, involves none other than John Lennon and Harry Nilsson and a night at the Playboy Mansion that turned into a hilarious scene.
In her memoir, Cher recalls meeting Lennon and Nilsson one evening at a Los Angeles restaurant in 1974. She invited them to a “movie night” at Hugh Hefner’s mansion, a more relaxed gathering known for cocktails and screenings rather than the wild parties typically associated with the iconic spot.
But relaxed might be a stretch to describe what unfolded. According to Cher, Lennon and Nilsson, who were already a few drinks in, made a loud entrance, chanting “Hef! Hef! Hef!” in exaggerated accents. When Cher noticed the pair getting a bit too enthusiastic, she ushered them away from the crowd and into the mansion’s famous Grotto.
What happened next is pure Lennon. Cher writes that she briefly left the two in the Grotto, only to return and find them standing in the water – completely naked. Laughing, she recalls how Lennon and Nilsson threatened to roam around the mansion in their birthday suits, forcing her into what she called “herding drunks” back into their clothes.
Cher: The Memoir, released by Harper Collins, promises readers an unfiltered journey through her life, packed with raw honesty and her signature humor. The second installment is due sometime next year, ensuring there’s more of Cher’s remarkable journey to come.
