Primus is officially on the hunt for their next drummer, sending out a call to “all points in the universe” following the departure of their longtime percussionist, Tim Alexander.
In a statement shared on social media, the band described the ideal candidate as someone with “original sensibility and aesthetic,” who’s ready to “open new doors in the creative world.” While technical skill is important, Primus emphasized that groove, pocket, and the ability to “listen, react, and contribute to the musical conversation” are the real priorities.
The open call comes in the wake of Alexander’s recent announcement about his decision to step away from the band. Explaining the move, he said: “Over time, I started realizing that it was affecting my physical life, it was affecting my mental life, and it was affecting my family life, and my heart just wasn’t in it.”
For now, Primus is keeping things rolling with a mix of creative solutions. Their annual New Year’s show will feature members from Holy Mackerel and Frog Brigade, while none other than Tool’s Danny Carey will step in as drummer for their upcoming festival set in the Dominican Republic.
Looking ahead to 2024, the band is gearing up for the second leg of the Sessanta tour with Tool’s Maynard James Keenan. And while the search for their next full-time drummer continues, Primus has set the bar high: they’re looking for nothing less than the “Greatest Drummer on Earth.”
