Madonna is doubling down on her vision for her long-awaited biopic, Who’s That Girl, despite ongoing challenges with producers and agents. The pop icon took to Instagram on Monday (November 18) to express her frustrations and reflect on the project’s future after a series of meetings in Los Angeles.
“I’ve been working on it for four years!” she wrote. “After struggling for days in LA, listening to producers and agents tell me why I couldn’t make my film - downsize-down scale – think smaller – they say — I realised that everything in my life is going to be challenged.”
She continued: “I guess I should be grateful.. It forces me to think outside the box. I did not have a normal life. I cannot make this in the normal way… We cannot shrink and make ourselves smaller… Should I make the story of my life into a series or a feature film?”
Madonna’s biopic, named after her iconic 1987 album, has been in development for years and has faced several setbacks. The singer-songwriter has been rewriting the script herself and plans to direct the project, ensuring that her story is told from her perspective. “No one’s going to tell my story but me,” she previously declared in an interview.
Initially paused in 2023 due to her 40th-anniversary Celebration Tour, the film has not been shelved entirely. Universal Pictures remains interested, and Ozark star Julia Garner is still attached to portray Madonna. Garner reportedly emerged as the favorite for the role after an extensive search.
Madonna’s creative drive doesn’t stop there. She’s also been in the studio with longtime collaborator Stuart Price, known for his work on her 2005 masterpiece Confessions On A Dance Floor. While details are scarce, fans are speculating that new material could signal the Queen of Pop’s first album since 2019’s Madame X.
