TopHit Names Global Internet Stars of Early 2024

TopHit.com has summarized the music trends for the first seven months of 2024. What are music lovers watching and listening to online?

The biggest hit on YouTube this year is a hot collaboration between two young Chileans. FloyyMenor and Cris Mj introduced a new track, Gata Only, to the audience in February. The track was initially released as a solo version by FloyyMenor, who wrote the song between concerts while already being a rising star on the Chilean scene. The world fell in love with the version featuring Cris Mj, even though a remix with Latin urban heavyweights Ozuna and Anitta was also released. Gata Only became a global YouTube phenomenon with 710 million streams and a fantastic 960 million plays on Spotify!

Another significant Latin American hit this year, surprisingly, was recorded by an American artist from Arizona. The 19-year-old singer Xavi gained crazy popularity thanks to his spectacular track La Diabla, a nod to regional Mexican music, which came out as good as the ones by the genre king Peso Pluma. It is worth noting that the track's chorus is genuinely killer, and the path to major streams was paved through TikTok, where La Diabla became a viral sensation. 592 million streams on Spotify and 515 million on YouTube.

The most popular hit of the year on Spotify is the banger Beautiful Things by newcomer Benson Boone. The American performer and songwriter was discovered on TikTok by Imagine Dragons frontman Dan Reynolds, who helped him sign a contract with his own label. Beautiful Things became the biggest success in the musician's career, with over a billion streams on Spotify. Now Benson joins the relatively small "billionaires" club on the streaming service, among them Adele, The Weeknd, and Taylor Swift. We wish Benson to record even more cool songs.

In second place on Spotify is the main pop star of 2024, Sabrina Carpenter. Espresso became the calling card of spring and summer radio broadcasts. Despite its light, carefree pop sound, the banger outshone much more prestigious songs from The Weeknd and Taylor Swift. Second place and 973 million streams.

However, as an artist, Sabrina only took fourth place in the Spotify rankings. The absolute leader is Taylor Swift. The singer presented a new album, The Tortured Poets Department, which charted beautifully. In 2024, the pop diva has more than 5 billion streams, significantly ahead of The Weeknd, who is in second place.

On YouTube, it's a real Indian party, with top positions held by local playback singers who can be heard in Bollywood blockbusters, led by Alka Yagnik. They are competing with the insanely popular reggaeton king Bad Bunny and regional Mexican music's leading figure, Peso Pluma. Lately, Pluma has been in high demand: he opened his label and recorded unexpected collaborations with Karol G, Kali Uchis, and DJ Snake, featuring an entirely unfamiliar sound for him.

In the top 500 Global YouTube, 31% of songs are performed in English, and 20% in Spanish. The main genres are Pop, Dance, and R&B. In the top 500 Global Spotify, there is a much stronger emphasis on English-language music content—76% of tracks are recorded in English, and 17% in Spanish.
