Some legal disputes in the music industry in 2024 were predictable, for example, the decision of major labels to file lawsuits against companies working with artificial intelligence, such as Suno and Udio. However, a recent lawsuit came as a surprise: Universal Music Group sued Believe and TuneCore, accusing them of "massive copyright infringement."
The complaint was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York on behalf of UMG and its subsidiaries Capital Records and Capital CMG, as well as ABKCO Music & Records and Concord Music Group.
The lawsuit does not skimp on harsh language against its opponents. It is stated that "Believe's customer base is overflowing with fraudulent 'artists' and pirated record labels who use Believe and its distribution network to distribute counterfeit copies of popular recordings throughout the digital music ecosystem."
