Metro Boomin has opened up about his personal rift with Drake, a fallout that he described as both “hurtful” and “disappointing.”
In a recent interview with GQ (as highlighted by Elliott Wilson on social media), the renowned producer reflected on the tension that has brewed between him and the Toronto rapper. While Metro remained tight-lipped about the exact cause of the disagreement, he assured fans that it wasn’t anything trivial. “Me and Drake, we had a personal issue, and for the record, not over no girl or nothing silly like that. It was a personal issue that really hurt me and disappointed me,” Metro shared.
The tension between Metro and Drake gained public attention earlier this year when Metro and Future teamed up with Kendrick Lamar on the track Like That. The song not only reignited Kendrick and Drake’s long-standing feud but also became a flashpoint for speculations about Metro’s own issues with Drake.
Despite the speculation, Metro clarified that the two albums he created with Future—We Don’t Trust You and We Still Don’t Trust You—were not designed as diss projects targeting Drake. “People really think we sat for two years, making two albums [to be] like, Yo, f**k this dude.’ That’s not who we are,” Metro explained. “You really think we are going to spend that much time, effort, resources on just trying to get at somebody on an album? Blowing budgets on two albums—going over budget? That’s some serious hate. Neither one of us rock like that.”
Meanwhile, Kendrick and Drake’s feud escalated dramatically earlier this year, culminating in Kendrick’s scathing track Not Like Us and Drake’s fiery response with The Heart Part 6. Though the public back-and-forth subsided in May, the legal battle continues. Drake has since filed two lawsuits against Universal Music Group, accusing the label of inflating streaming numbers for Kendrick’s track and greenlighting its release despite defamatory lyrics.
As for Metro and Drake, the producer didn’t indicate whether reconciliation was on the horizon, but his words hint at lingering wounds. “It’s just regular sh*t,” he said.
